Kentucky ranks close to the top of the latest divorce rate data

There was a time many years ago when a negative social stigma was associated with the decision to bring a marriage to an end. However, as you are probably aware, going through a divorce is now viewed in a much more positive fashion and as a way to move forward toward a brighter future. In many of these instances, both here in Kentucky and across the nation, former partners have been able to establish amicable relationships post-divorce, which can especially prove invaluable when there are any children involved.

With couples deciding to end their marriages becoming more prevalent over the past several decades, there has also been an increase in studies and surveys that track the divorce rate — both nationally and on a state-by-state basis. Data recently released by the U.S. Census Bureau shows Kentucky as one of the states with the highest divorce rate. Some interesting specifics from this survey include the following:

  • The overall divorce rate for the entire United States rose by 3.6% from 2021 to 2022.
  • Over the past decade from 2011-2021, the divorce rate for our country has actually declined by 27%.
  • Southern states represented more than half of the 10 states with the high divorce rates in 2022.
  • Kentucky had the third highest divorce rate of any state in 2022, trailing only Wyoming and Arkansas.
  • More specifically, approximately 9.9 out of every 1,000 women surveyed in the state of Kentucky reported they had gotten divorced at some point during 2022.

Even though the negativity surrounding the ending of a marriage has substantially diminished to a point where it’s close to nonexistent in many cases, there are still many potential challenges and complex issues you could encounter during the divorce process.

Fortunately, there is professional help and support readily available to help guide you through these matters, including property division, child custody, child support, spousal maintenance and much more. An experienced Kentucky family law attorney can answer all of your questions and concerns, protect your future best interests and increase your odds of achieving the best divorce settlement possible.
