Helpful strategies for efficient and successful co-parenting

Divorce is an emotional and often complicated event. For parents who divorce, the primary concern is usually the safety and well-being of their children. This is why shared parenting, or co-parenting, is becoming more and more popular for Kentucky families. Numerous studies have shown that children benefit the most when both parents are involved in their lives. Here are a few ways parents can make their co-parenting relationship a successful one.

Communication

Effective communication is the key to successful co-parenting. These days, parents have a number of ways to communicate, from email to group messaging to good old fashioned phone calls. Parents need to work together to find the method of communication that works best for them, and stick to it. Ineffective communication will make things difficult for everyone, including the children. If difficulties arise, parents may want to consider working with a coach or therapist to help with effective communication.

Create a parenting plan

Cooperation is just as important as communication in co-parenting. It is helpful for parents to meet and create a plan or set of rules for their parenting partnership. Many parents find it good to involve a third party, such as a parenting coordinator or mediator. The plan should include things such as how birthdays and holidays will be shared and how the children will be picked up on transition days.

Remember, this is about the children. Don’t bring issues from the failed marriage into parenting. A co-parenting arrangement can only be successful if both parents keep the best interests of the children at the forefront. Parents in Kentucky who need help or have questions about child custody agreements could benefit by consulting a legal representative. An experienced family law attorney can answer tough questions and offer valuable legal guidance.
