Understanding shopping injuries

On Behalf of | Jun 8, 2021 | Personal Injury |

For a lot of people in Kentucky, shopping is about much more than just picking up household necessities. Many find that it is a great opportunity to spend time with friends or family, while others enjoy browsing through stores on their own. However, what shoppers might not realize is just how dangerous the act of shopping can be. Thousands of people suffer shopping injuries each and every year.

What is a shopping injury?

A shopping injury is any type of personal injury that occurs to someone who is visiting a retail establishment. Shopping related injuries are often minor, although these can still be painful and lead to negative health outcomes. More serious examples of shopping related injuries include:

  • Broken bones
  • Sprains
  • Head trauma
  • Neck and spinal injuries

Although any type of accident can cause a serious injury, shopping injuries tend to be the result of accidents specifically related to the shopping experience. For example, shopping cart accidents in which shopping carts tip over can cause serious bodily harm to shoppers. Overcrowding is another issue, and happens when a store does not adequately limit the number of shoppers inside the establishment at any given time. Here are a few other types of accidents and situations that contribute to shopping injuries:

  • Slip and falls
  • Falling objects
  • Poorly designed or maintained parking lots

Stores sometimes try to blame victims for their own injuries, even when the related accidents were clearly outside of their control. For Kentucky victims in this position, getting help for shopping injuries may be a challenge. However, many find that they can successfully recover compensation related to their injuries through the careful actions of a personal injury lawsuit.
